Publication date: 05 July 2024

Natural disasters are increasing, affecting millions of people. CEB is currently investing over €2 billion to finance disaster risk management projects - saving lives, restoring infrastructure, strengthening the resilience.

The case of Türkiye, after the devastating 2023 earthquakes which claimed more than 50 000 lives, is an example of how the CEB swiftly responded to support the country's recovery efforts.

With a €500 million loan, the Bank financed the Ministry of Health’s plan to quickly build 12 seismic-resistant emergency hospitals, providing critical healthcare services to communities affected by the earthquakes.

The CEB has also partnered with the Türkish authorities and other multilateral lenders, with €2.3 billion in funding, to enhance earthquake awareness and preparedness. The Istanbul Seismic Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness Project (ISMEP) has strengthened emergency preparedness and mitigated seismic risk for priority public buildings in Istanbul, including over 1 300 schools. Thanks to ISMEP, over 1.6 million Istanbul residents have received safe-life trainings to increase their awareness and preparedness for disasters. Through the CEB’s recent grant to ISMEP, 20 000 more people will receive similar trainings.
