The CEB has been mobilising its resources and expertise to support member countries and their citizens in responding to ongoing interwoven challenges. This Report presents highlights of the year, summarising key projects and actions in 2024 as the CEB delivered on its mission of promoting social cohesion. Geopolitical shifts and global trade tensions, together with low productivity growth and stretched public budgets, continued to cast a shadow over Europe’s economy in 2024. Nevertheless, the CEB was able to build on its strong 2023 performance and consolidate its position as the social development bank for Europe.
In 2024, the CEB approved 44 projects for a total volume of €4.5 billion across 22 countries. A total of 38 projects were completed in the same year, with loan disbursements of €3.8 billion in 22 countries. These projects are estimated to have benefited over 12 million people through improved social infrastructure, while enabling over 327 thousand jobs to be created or maintained. See map.
The CEB’s loan approvals of €4.5 billion across 44 new loan projects in 2024 were in line with the Strategic Framework, which lays out three lines of action for the CEB’s operations over five years:
Gender, climate change and digitalisation are cross-cutting considerations in all three lines of action.
Partnerships help maximise the CEB’s effectiveness as Europe’s social development bank. They are also vehicles for sharing knowledge and best practices, and underpin multilateral action.
The CEB recorded a solid financial performance, with audited results for the financial year 2024 showing a net profit of €124.3 million, 13.8% higher than in 2023.
