A new hospital in the Republic of Moldova
The country continues to face significant challenges in public health, as evidenced by its notably low life expectancy – 74 years for women and 64 years for men – compared to the EU averages of 83 and 78 years, respectively. To address these disparities and improve health outcomes, Moldovan authorities have committed to building two new regional hospitals, including a state-of-the-art tertiary care facility in the city of Bălți. This hospital will be equipped with around 200 beds and is expected to serve more than 680 000 people living in the northern part of the country.
In 2025, the CEB secured a €6 million grant from the European Union through the Neighbourhood Investment Platform (NIP) to partially finance the construction of the Bălți Regional Hospital. This funding is complemented by an €86 million loan approved by the CEB. In addition, the CEB is providing funding to the Moldovan Ministry of Health to elaborate the hospital design and ensure that it adheres to international standards. This technical assistance is funded by an additional €3 million grant from the NIP.
