Renovated schools in the Republic of Moldova
Students in the rural areas of the country face ongoing challenges in accessing quality education, as reflected in lower achievement in reading, mathematics, and science compared to urban students. To bridge this gap and promote equal learning opportunities, Moldovan authorities have embarked on an ambitious initiative to modernise 90 schools nationwide.
The CEB and the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) are jointly financing the renovation of 15 of these schools. The CEB is providing a €30 million loan to cover the designs and reconstruction works, while the E5P is contributing a €5 million grant specifically for energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.
These renovations are expected to yield both social and environmental benefits, including an estimated 65% reduction in heating and electricity costs and annual greenhouse gas savings of 5 900 tonnes. The upgraded facilities will benefit around 12 800 students and offer improved working conditions for 800 school staff.
